The de Havilland DH.27 Derby was a large single-engined biplane designed to meet Air Ministry specification 2/20 for a long-range heavy day bomber, and it did not reach production. It was a two-bay biplane without sweep or stagger, with fabric-covered wooden wings that could fold outside the inner interplane struts, and a thickened upper centre section. Two prototypes were built, the first flying on 13 October 1922, powered by a 650 hp Rolls-Royce Condor III water-cooled V12 engine. The Air Ministry preferred the Avro Aldershot over the Derby, since the all-wood Derby was considerably heavier than the mixed-construction Aldershot, so the type went no further.
