The CRRC Tangshan high-speed freight train is a prototype freight electric multiple unit that CRRC Tangshan unveiled in December 2020, designed for a top speed of 350 kilometres per hour. It was derived from a passenger trainset of the CR400BF type that had been temporarily rebuilt for freight use during the November 2020 shopping festival run for Alibaba. The prototype replaces the passenger doors with purpose-built 2.9 metre doors that let two rows of containers be loaded onto roller floors, giving about 800 square metres of usable floor space and a cargo utilisation of roughly 85 percent. The unit is designed to work in temperatures from minus 25 to 40 degrees Celsius. Its nose was shaped by biomimicry to resemble a Chinese sturgeon, a form its makers claim reduces air resistance. The article describes a prototype only and does not state a production order or an entry into regular service.
