The HR4000 is an electric multiple unit rapid transit car manufactured by CRRC and assembled in Springfield, Massachusetts, for the B and D lines of the Los Angeles Metro Rail. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority ordered 64 cars from CRRC in 2017 at a cost of 178 million dollars, with options on 218 more, after CRRC offered the lowest price and 65 percent United States content. Bodyshells were built in Changchun, China, and construction at the CRRC Massachusetts plant began in 2021; deliveries were delayed by supply chain problems during the COVID-19 pandemic and by checks under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. The first pair of cars was delivered in July 2023 and the trains entered service on the D Line on 20 December 2024. Metro did not exercise the options and in January 2024 ordered 182 HR5000 cars from Hyundai Rotem. The cars have LED destination signs, more longitudinal seating and open gangways between married pairs.
