The Chrysler Patriot was a turbine-electric hybrid sports-prototype racing car with flywheel energy storage, built by Reynard Motorsport and SatCon Technology Corporation for Chrysler in 1993 as a concept car with the express aim of winning the Le Mans 24 Hours. A two-stage gas turbine running on liquefied natural gas drove an alternator that fed a 525-volt AC induction traction motor, with a 147-pound composite flywheel spinning at 58,000 rpm in a vacuum chamber for extra acceleration. SatCon and Chrysler won a Discover Award for innovation in 1995, but serious problems with the flywheel's mechanical integrity could not be overcome.
