The BYD e6 is a battery electric vehicle that BYD Auto has manufactured from 2009 and was the company's first battery electric car, mostly used by fleets. Field testing began in China in May 2010 with 40 taxis in Shenzhen, and sales to the general public started in Shenzhen in October 2011, more than two years behind the plan. E6 cars have worked as taxis in China, Colombia, Belgium, Singapore, New York and Chicago, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Indonesia. BYD first claimed a 300 kilometre range, later quoted up to 400 kilometres with an 82-kilowatt-hour battery, and planned a US price of 35,000 dollars, but in May 2013 said the car would only be sold to US fleets at 52,000 dollars. China sales reached 34,862 units to December 2016, making it the country's best-selling pure electric car in 2016.
