Budd XR-400

Automobiles

The Budd XR-400 was a fully operational 2+2 sports convertible concept built in 1962 by the Budd Company, a Detroit body maker, to tempt American Motors into a low-cost Rambler-based sports model. The X stood for experimental and the R for Rambler. Budd started from a two-door 1962 Ambassador chassis, moved the floor pan back and shortened it, and lowered the engine, giving a long nose, a short rear deck and a 108 inch wheelbase, with a 327 cubic inch AMC V8 and automatic transmission. Budd hoped to supply production bodies by October 1963, ahead of the Ford Mustang, but AMC declined. The only prototype stayed with Budd, was renamed XR-Budd and was sold to The Henry Ford Museum in 1997.
