The Boeing YC-14 was a twinjet short take-off and landing tactical military transport, Boeing's entry in the United States Air Force Advanced Medium STOL Transport competition to replace the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. Its distinctive feature was upper-surface blowing, with the engines mounted over the wing so that the exhaust stuck to the lowered flaps and was bent downward, combined with a NASA-derived supercritical wing. Two prototypes were built and the first flew on 9 August 1976, flying against the McDonnell Douglas YC-15 at Edwards Air Force Base. Both aircraft met the requirements, but the program ended in December 1979 without a production order and was replaced by the C-X program that led to the C-17 Globemaster III.
