Boeing E-4

Military Aircraft

The Boeing E-4 Advanced Airborne Command Post, the current Nightwatch aircraft, is a series of strategic command and control aircraft operated by the United States Air Force. The aircraft are modified from the Boeing 747-200B for the National Emergency Airborne Command Post program, and one of their main purposes is to keep the government running during nuclear war, which earned the nickname Doomsday plane. The E-4 serves as a survivable mobile command post for the president, the secretary of defense and their successors. The first E-4A was completed at Boeing Everett plant in 1973, and four aircraft are now operated at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.
