The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large four engine military strategic and tactical airlifter that entered United States Air Force service in the 1990s, designed to carry heavy vehicles and outsized cargo directly into relatively short, austere airfields close to a battlefield as well as over long intercontinental distances. It has become a core component of American and allied strategic airlift and is also widely used for humanitarian relief missions.
