Boeing B-47 Stratojet

Military Aircraft

The Boeing B-47 Stratojet, company Model 450, was an American six-engined, turbojet-powered strategic bomber built to fly high and fast enough to avoid enemy interceptors, with the main job of carrying nuclear weapons to targets in the Soviet Union. Its swept wing, informed by captured German research, and its engines slung in nacelles under the wing set the pattern for later jet bombers and for jet airliners. The first prototype flew on 17 December 1947, the type entered Strategic Air Command service in 1951, and more than 2,000 were built. It also served in reconnaissance and electronic roles before being replaced, largely by the B-52, by 1965.
