Baltimore and Ohio class S

Steam and Early Locomotives

The Baltimore and Ohio class S was a family of 2-10-2 locomotives that the railroad bought in three stages. The first thirty-one, class S proper, came from Baldwin in 1914 and were numbered 6000 to 6030. The S-1 class followed in 1923 and 1924 with seventy-five more, split between Baldwin and Lima, and the S-1a batch of 1926 added fifty, the first twenty-five of them built by Lima as numbers 6175 to 6199 and the second twenty-five by Baldwin. Crews called them the big sixes because, until the 1954 renumbering, every road number began with a six. Some were retired and scrapped in 1938 and the rest worked until 1953 to 1959. None of the B&O class S locomotives was preserved.
