The Avro 679 Manchester was a British twin-engine heavy bomber built to Air Ministry Specification P.13/36 and the forerunner of the Avro Lancaster. Its prototype first flew on 25 July 1939 and it entered squadron service in November 1940. It served with the RAF and the Royal Canadian Air Force but was regarded as a failure, mainly because its Rolls-Royce Vulture engines were underdeveloped, underpowered and unreliable. Production was halted in November 1941 after 202 aircraft, the 193 operational Manchesters flew 1,269 sorties with Bomber Command, and the type flew its last operation against Bremen on 25 June 1942. Its redesign as a four-engined bomber with Rolls-Royce Merlin engines became the Lancaster.
