Avro Andover

Military Aircraft

The Avro Andover was a 1920s British military transport aircraft built by Avro for the Royal Air Force, of which only four were built in two versions: three Type 561 flying ambulances and a single Type 563 twelve-seat transport. It was designed to replace the Airco DH.10 Amiens on the Cairo to Baghdad Desert Air Route as a single-engined biplane for passengers and air ambulance work, combining a new steel-tube fuselage with the wings, undercarriage and tail of the Avro Aldershot bomber and a Rolls-Royce Condor III engine. It first flew on 28 June 1924, but the route passed to Imperial Airways and the RAF placed no order, so the three Type 561 aircraft went to RAF Halton.
