The Avro 549 Aldershot was a British single-engined heavy bomber built by Avro to the 1920 British Specification 2/20 for a long-range day and night bomber powered by a Rolls-Royce Condor engine, in competition with the de Havilland Derby. The Air Ministry ordered two prototypes on 2 December 1920, and the first flew at Hamble Aerodrome in October 1921. The fuselage was lengthened by 6 ft to improve directional control. The Aldershot was a three-bay biplane with a steel-framed fuselage and wooden wings, about 800 lb lighter than the Derby, and 15 production Aldershot IIIs were ordered in January 1923. The only operator was No. 99 Squadron RAF from 1924, and the Aldershot also formed the basis of the Avro Andover transport.
