The AMC Cavalier was a compact four-door concept sedan that American Motors Corporation presented in 1965 as a study in symmetry and cheaper tooling. Its fenders at opposite corners were identical, its doors could swap sides and its hood and deck lid were interchangeable, a scheme intended to cut tooling cost by roughly thirty percent. Dick Teague designed it in the advanced design studio, and it toured as part of the Project IV group with the Vixen, AMX and AMX II show cars. Under the panels sat a conventional front-mounted 343 cubic inch AMC V8 with rear-wheel drive. Elements of its proportions reached the 1970 Hornet, and the 1967 Project Europa proposal tried to turn the idea into a small front-drive world car.
