The AMC AMX/3 was a mid-engine sports car that American Motors Corporation developed to give its showrooms a halo model and to rival the De Tomaso Pantera. Dick Teague's design studio drew the body, while Italian specialists including Bizzarrini, Italdesign and the Diomante workshop engineered the chassis and built the prototypes, and BMW ran test programmes on the early cars. A semi-monocoque steel structure carried an AMC 390 cubic inch V8 behind the seats, and the car was shown to the press in Rome and New York in 1970 with Karmann lined up to build it in Germany. AMC dropped the project without explanation after roughly half a dozen cars, and one of its chassis later underpinned the 1972 Iso Varedo concept.
