AMC Amitron

Automobiles

The AMC Amitron was an experimental electric subcompact built in 1967 by American Motors Corporation together with Gulton Industries as a study in urban commuter transport. It paired lithium-nickel-fluoride batteries for steady power with nickel-cadmium batteries for peak demand, and its regenerative braking turned the drive motors into generators as the car slowed. The aim was roughly 150 miles of range at 50 miles per hour from a three-passenger body only 85 inches long, entered through a canopy that hinged up and back instead of side doors. Battery cost and technology problems ended the programme at the prototype stage, though the car was renamed Electron in 1977 as a Concept 80 show car and its short, wide stance fed into the later AMC Pacer.
