The Aérospatiale Alouette III, company designations SA 316 and SA 319, is a single-engine light utility helicopter developed by Sud Aviation as an enlarged Alouette II with two more seats. Its prototype, the SE 3160, flew on 28 February 1959 under the pilot Jean Boulet, and series production began in 1961. After Aérospatiale took over Sud Aviation in 1970 it became the principal manufacturer, and the French line built about 1,437 by 1979 and delivered its last in 1985. Hindustan Aeronautics in India, Industria Aeronautică Română in Romania and the Swiss federal aircraft factory built it under licence. Military users flew it for observation, rescue and transport, and civil users for casualty evacuation and crop spraying. More than 2,000 were built.
