An updated MX-5 was introduced in 2019. It looked the same as before, but the engine was upgraded to 135 kilowatts, or 181 horsepower, and the manual transmission cars gained a dual mass flywheel. Edmunds named the MX-5 its Editor's Choice for Best Sports Car in 2019, and it was on the Car and Driver 10Best list for the last time in a run from 2016 to 2019. Wheels magazine named it Car of the Year for 2016. The roadster was built at Mazda's Hiroshima plant.
