A Protonic Red Edition of the i8 was shown at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show and produced at BMW Plant Leipzig from July 2016. This special edition car had a Protonic Red paint finish with accents in Frozen Grey. In 2016 the i8 was in its second full year of sales, as BMW's electrified sports car, with its three cylinder engine and electric motor. It was a limited special version of the plug in sports car, with the same engine as the regular i8.
