The M3 model based on the F30 platform, designated F80, was introduced in 2014 with the S55 twin turbocharged straight six, the first time an M3 had a separate model designation. At the same time the coupe and convertible, after one year in the F30 range, were redesigned and sold as the BMW 4 Series, leaving the 3 Series as a pure saloon, wagon and Gran Turismo range. The Modern Line trim was discontinued after the 2014 model year because of low sales.
