As part of the third generation line up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called the Outlander PHEV. In March 2013 the battery pack of an Outlander PHEV at a dealership in Yokohama overheated and melted some cells after being fully charged. The battery packs were produced by GS Yuasa, the same company supplying the Boeing 787 Dreamliner whose fleet was grounded in January 2013. Global sales of the Outlander achieved 1.5 million in October 2016, fifteen years after launch.
