E53 production ceased on 22 September 2006, after the E70 X5 replaced the first generation in July 2006. The E53 had been made since 1 September 1999 and was the first SUV ever produced by BMW. Its replacement, the E70, was wider and longer, and the X5 was now a well established model in the BMW range. The E53 had been the only X5 since 1999 and was built in South Carolina, and the E70 replaced it with production starting in the same year at Spartanburg and Toluca.
