Mitsubishi introduced the Lancer Evolution IX in Japan on 3 March 2005 and exhibited it at the Geneva Motor Show the same day. All domestic market versions until the release of the Evolution IX in 2005 were limited by a gentlemen's agreement to advertise no more than 280 PS. In the Super Taikyu Series the Lancer Evolution dominated the Class 2 championship, later designated ST-2 in 2005. The Lancer Evolution was a sports sedan and rally car based on the Lancer, made by Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 until 2016, with ten official versions.
