The Carisma of 2003 was in its ninth year, a large family car for the European market, built at NedCar in Born with Mitsubishi's inline four petrol engines or the 1.9 liter DI-D turbo diesel. Over 350,000 were built during its production run, in saloon and hatchback forms. The model name was derived from a combination of the English car and the Greek kharisma, meaning divine gift. The Carisma competed with the likes of the Ford Mondeo in the traditionally conservative European company car market.
