For 2003 the Ranger Tremor became a stand alone trim level and the FX4 line was expanded when Ford introduced the Ranger FX4 Off Road, with the previous FX4 becoming the FX4 Level II. The FX4 Off Road had a chrome grille and front bumper, and in 2003 and 2004 it was offered with a FlareSide bed and, by special order, in a regular cab. The South American Ranger kept its 1998 front bodywork until the 2003 model year.
