In 2002 production of the car under license began in Brazil, where it was sold as the Pajero TR4 and stayed in production until 2015, long after the Japanese car ended. The name TR4 replaced iO after imported cars had been referred to as 1.0 in some markets, which could suggest a one liter engine. The Brazilian TR4 was the first four-wheel drive flexible-fuel vehicle of Mitsubishi. The car was exported as the Montero iO and to Europe as the Pajero Pinin.
