The eK Sport was introduced on 2 September 2002 as a sportier version of the eK Wagon. The eK was by then Mitsubishi's highest volume model in Japan, and it was sold through the Car Plaza retail chain with the 3G83 three cylinder engine, naturally aspirated at 50 PS or turbocharged at 64 PS, and with front or four wheel drive on most models. In Japan the eK was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza. Most models could be had with either front- or four-wheel drive.
