The Fusion was shown as a concept at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show and in production form at the same show in 2002, with sales beginning in late 2002. It was built on the Fiesta's platform but was longer, wider and taller, with high seating, theatre style rear seats, a fold flat front passenger seat and a flush load floor. Ford marketed it as an urban activity vehicle, its name referring to its blend of hatchback, MPV and SUV features.
