In 2001 Mazda released two more limited editions of the RX-7 in Japan, the R Bathurst R in August, limited to 650 cars, and a special edition of the R Bathurst in December, which numbered 2,174. The Bathurst R of 2001 was a special version to commemorate the car's victory at Bathurst in Japan only. The final production of the model was coming in 2002. The sequential twin turbo system was extremely complex and was developed with the aid of Hitachi.
