The shell of the Bantam of 2001 was monocoque, as is true of compact half ton pickups, which gave more common parts with the passenger cars they come from and easier assembly. Such pickups have about thirty five percent less weight than a one tonne truck, with 1.3 to 1.8 litre engines. It was the small half ton pickup known there as a bakkie, sold beside the Mazda Rustler. The Bantam was a coupe utility pickup that Ford produced in South Africa for the South African market.
