A safety car version of the Z8 was produced for use in the 2001 season of MotoGP, leading the field in the world championship. The standard car continued in production, using neon exterior lighting for the tail lights and turn indicators, which could activate more quickly than ordinary lamps and were expected to last for the life of the vehicle. The Z8 therefore appeared as a pace car in the second year of the new millennium as well as a sports car for private buyers.
