In 2001 both the European and North American M models switched to the new S54 engine, the more powerful straight six of the E46 M3, giving the M Roadster and M Coupe a higher output than before. The Z3 range was in its final full year, as its successor the E85 Z4 was already close to launch, and the production figures were established. The coupe and roadster were available with the S54 in the M models in this model year, in both Europe and North America.
