For the 2000 model year the Intrepid received new variable assist steering, and an optional 4 disc in dash CD changer. The second generation was marketed to the commercial and government markets, particularly the base model from 1998 to 2000 and the SE from 2001 to 2004. In the late 1990s Chrysler used the Intrepid as a research platform for a hybrid electric vehicle, the Intrepid ESX concepts, built in the time frame of 1997 to 1998.
