The first full year of the X5 saw a one off version, the X5 LM, equipped with the P75 V12 engine based on that of the BMW V12 LMR that won Le Mans in 1999, set a lap record at the Nuerburgring in 2000 in the hands of Hans Joachim Stuck. Design patents for the E53 were registered in the United States on 18 January 2000, after being filed in 1998. The X5 was by then the first BMW SUV on sale in many markets and was built in South Carolina.
