The taxi spec sedan remained in production for Japanese commercial use until December 1999, when Mitsubishi abandoned that market. The eighth generation Galant was in its fourth year and the American Galant in its second as a mid size car. The Mirage derived Lancer and the Galant were sold at different Japanese dealers, and the Galant was built in Japan and, for North America, at Normal, Illinois. The name Galant comes from the French word for chivalrous.
