By 1999 Mitsubishi dropped the Space Wagon from its lineup in the Philippines without a direct replacement, as the earlier second generation cars had been sold there since 1992. The third generation Chariot Grandis was in its second year and was marketed as a large minivan, offered in Europe with the 2.0 liter 4G63 SOHC engine. The Chariot Grandis was named after the French grandiose. The Chariot moved from a ladder frame to monocoque construction, using the company's RISE safety body.
