After skipping the 1998 model year, Mercury introduced the eighth generation Cougar for 1999 at the 1998 Los Angeles Auto Show, serving as the replacement for the Ford Probe. The first front wheel drive Cougar had a fully independent multilink suspension and was available with a 2.0 L Zetec four cylinder of 125 horsepower or a 2.5 L Duratec V6 of 170 horsepower. A total of 112 Roush Edition cars were made across 1999 and 2000.
