A 1.8 liter direct injection petrol engine was fitted from 1998, and Mitsubishi claimed the 1.8 GDI engine offered a 20 percent saving in fuel consumption, 10 percent more power and 20 percent less greenhouse gas than a conventional 1.8 petrol engine. Turbo diesel engines of 1.9 liters were sourced from Renault. The chassis was also used by Proton to develop the Proton Waja. The model name was derived from a combination of the English car and the Greek kharisma, meaning divine gift.
