For the 1998 model year a third generation Ranger made its debut, abandoning the Twin I Beam front suspension for a short and long arm layout, which let designers lower the hoodline, with new fenders and a grille influenced by the 1997 F-150. The standard engine was a new 2.5 liter Lima four. The Ford Ranger EV, Ford's first battery electric vehicle in the US, began production, and Ford of Argentina introduced a crew cab variant.
