A 2.5 litre turbodiesel was the common engine of the Freda of 1998 in Japan, though V6 petrol engines also existed in the range. It was a Mazda Bongo Friendee with Ford badges, in an eight seat body and with the choice of two or four wheel drive and automatic transmissions. The Freda was a Ford badged copy of the Mazda Bongo Friendee eight seat minivan sold in Japan. Ford sold it through its partner dealers in Japan, and many were later converted into camper vans.
