In 1998 Ford announced the all new Focus, which replaced the Escort and superseded a name that had been in use for thirty years. The Escort range was cut down to Flight and Finesse editions and sold for two more years in parallel with the Focus, so the Escort that Ford now built was a stopgap range kept for buyers who wanted a cheaper car. In Britain, all engines except the 1.6 liter petrol and 1.8 liter turbo diesel were dropped, as were the three door hatchback and the four door saloon.
