The TJ was introduced in 1996 as a 1997 model and reintroduced the circular headlights that classic Jeep models were known for. It was unveiled on 2 January 1996 at the Detroit auto show, arrived in showrooms in April 1996, and swapped leaf springs for coil springs front and rear. YJ production ended in December 1995 before the first TJ production in January 1996. There was no 1996 model year Wrangler, so the 1997 TJ followed directly after the 1995 YJ.
