The Lincoln-Mercury division introduced its first SUV for the 1997 model year, the Mercury Mountaineer, a rebadged Explorer. In contrast to the Mazda Navajo of the first generation, the Mountaineer was sold only as a five door. The Ford Explorer itself continued in three door and five door forms with rear wheel drive as standard and a choice of V6 or V8 power, and the Mountaineer would be a sibling for the following fourteen years.
