The C5 was unveiled on January 6, 1997 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, after being delayed from its planned debut in 1993 for the 40th anniversary. The first model year had only the fastback coupe, and the convertible followed later. It was also the first General Motors vehicle with the LS series of small block engines. The C5 had a hydroformed box frame, which gave an improved structural platform, especially for the convertible, and its transmission was relocated to improve handling.
