The Lancer platform was redesigned in 1996, and along with it, the Evolution, which became the Evolution IV. Lancer Evolutions were successful in WRC rallies from 1996 to 1999, mostly in the hands of Finnish driver Tommi Makinen, who clinched four consecutive drivers' titles from 1996 to 1999. Between 1996 and 2012 the Lancer Evolution secured fifteen championship titles. The Lancer Evolution was a sports sedan and rally car based on the Lancer, made by Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 until 2016, with ten official versions.
