The four door saloon went on sale in 1996. It was only available for 1996 and 1997 as a 1.8 liter saloon, with trim levels L, LX and LS, in a market in which the Carisma competed with the Ford Mondeo. The chassis was also used by Proton to develop the Proton Waja. The Carisma competed with the likes of the Ford Mondeo in the traditionally conservative European company car market. The model name was derived from a combination of the English car and the Greek kharisma, meaning divine gift.
