For 1996 a passenger side airbag was introduced as an option, with a key operated lockout so that a child seat could be used, making the Ranger the first compact pickup to offer dual airbags. The FlareSide bed first used on the Splash in 1992 became an option for all short bed Rangers. The first Rangers produced at the General Pacheco plant in Argentina were built in 1996, as single cab versions with gasoline engines.
