1996 was the Z3's first full year: the six cylinder engines were introduced into the roadster, after the four cylinder launch cars, and the James Bond Edition was sold for 35,000 dollars to celebrate the car's film role. The entire production run of more than 15,000 roadsters for 1996 was sold out by the time the car was introduced, showing the strength of demand for BMW's new two seater. The Z3 therefore had a strong start and put the Z series on the map for the first time as a volume product.
