The Dodge Stratus was introduced in December 1994 for the 1995 model year. Upon its debut it was available in two trim levels, the base model and the sportier ES, and the base model came standard with a 2.0 liter SOHC four with a 2.4 liter DOHC four optional. For the ES trim the 2.0 liter engine was standard from 1995 through 1997. It was designed to replace the high volume Spirit and Dynasty and was built at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan.
